BB Second Season Challenge (III)

Finally, after an extra week of time, here are the first three orcs from the Black Orc team to continue the challenge.

You can see the painted orcs from DarthBLU here, and you can vote here (forum in spanish only).

I have had lots of fun painting them and for the first time in a long time I have tried new techniques! After over 25 years painting I realized the other day that I learnt most of what I know in the first five years and since then I am just using them over and over... so it was about time I learnt and tried something new!

For these guys I decided to try painting the armour using the stippling technique as shown here and for both the metals and the skin I tried glazes and wet blending. In particular, for the skin I used this video from the great josedavinci as a base.
I am particularly happy about how the metals turned out, although to be honest the photos I managed to take are really bad, even though I started to use Lightroom and Photoshop to try and improve them... I still did not see much improvement.

The colour scheme is based on the Berlin Rebels from the GFL, so that they can play against the Potsdam Royals, which is a suitable team to base my Nobility on!
The team colours are white and grey so not too much to pick from when painting them! Still, I think they look ok, after the extra weathering I applied, without it they were looking quite bland.
The skin looks kind of ok, but still lots of room for improvement.

BB Second Season Challenge (II)

It is only the second week and both DarthBLU and myself have failed to meet the target due to unrelated personal issues.

So, we have both agreed to give us another week.

We might need to revisit the weekly target if we see we will not be able to cope with it.

Stay tuned!

Black Templars Kill Team (I)

Back when I started to play Kill Team I decided I wanted to have a Space Marine Kill Team as spare one. In case someone wants to play and does not own a team. It is an easy to play and learn if you keep it to the basic so it's an overall good choice.

I wanted them to be Primaris only, mostly because I had never painted one, but I was not sure which Chapter to choose from.

I started to browse Instagram for inspiration and I almost decided on Salamanders until I found the amazing work of k03rnl. That is when I decided to build a Black Templars team.

Just look at his posts to understand what I mean :)

As for the painting, I chose to follow the Grimdark Blanchitsu style. I have tried my best to replicate the style used by k03rnl. Rather than super crisp details and edge highlights, the focus is on the grim atmosphere and the right choice of colours. See some examples of what I mean here, here and here.

It is very interesting to paint with this set of techniques and I had a blast painting these three marines, it is also pretty fast to be honest, something I was not expecting at all.

I did some minor conversions here and there to add a little bit more of character to them. I used the tentacle tool from GreenStuffWorld which is great for conversions. As for the bases, I wanted to try my best at creating a ruined base without too many details and just some old newspapers or posters lying around. I followed the technique described in this article, which made me go into a shop to buy cigarette rolling paper for the first time in my life :)

I am happy with how the bases turned out although in some cases I applied either too much ink or too little, and the paper absorbed it. I need to get the gist of it yet. In any case, I will be using it again to add some additional atmosphere to my Walking Dead bases, some time in the far future.

I have another five marines to paint, as soon as my schedule allows for it for a total of 8-man squad.

BB Second Season Challenge (I)

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am running a challenge to paint the whole BB2020 box.

For the first week, I have painted the referees.

I tried my best with the Dwarf. To be honest, it has been quite a while since I simply had fun painting something and spent as much time as I wanted, it was really refreshing and I think I managed to push my limits. After so much time painting "as fast as I could", painting with leisure and using a wet palette was refreshing and makes me want to push my own limits.

It is inspired on the one painted by VMan that I saw on Twitter. You can see of course that his is much better, but overall I think I managed to convey the same idea. If you are not following him, just do it, he posts really cool painted miniatures.

As I am running a challenge with DarthBLU, you can see his painted referees here the post in the forum to vote, here (in spanish).

In retrospect, I should have picked a brighter colour for the beard, like orange for example. And maybe paint something in one of the books on the side, instead of writing something up (LABB) that almost nobody can read.

I somehow did not manage to keep up my inspiration with the Elf. I am by far not as satisfied as with the Dwarf, but at least is finished. For the elf I tried applying texture to the feather, I think in hand it looks ok but in the picture it looks quite messy to be honest. The face was a botched-up job and I should have just redone it, but I was tired of it already. Next one will be better I hope.

Blood Bowl Second Season Challenge

For this year, 50% of the miniatures I want to paint are for Blood Bowl.

In order to make things more interesting, I decided to make a Challenge with DarthBlu. We both got our claws on a shiny Blood Bowl Second Edition box and decided that we would paint everything this year.

The Challenge will be as follows:

  1. we will paint the figures according to a schedule
  2. we will start painting at the same time
  3. at the end of the week we will post the results in our blogs and in Atalaya Vigia
    • we will make a poll to see who had the best painted figures for each week
  4. enjoy a fully painted BB2020 at the end!
"Stunned" rule: we can decide to skip one week at any given time without losing as there is one extra week in the schedule.

The schedule will be as follows:
  1. Referees
  2. 3 Black orcs
  3. 3 Black orcs
  4. 6 Goblins
  5. Troll
  6. Varag
  7. 4 Linemen
  8. 4 Bodyguard
  9. 2 Blitzers and 2 Throwers
  10. Ogre
  11. Griff
  12. Extra
Total time: 12 weeks (3 months) including the extra week required for the "Stunned" rule.

Here are the photos of the unpainted miniatures we will be painting week on week.

Referees

Black Orcs

These guys are awesome and the main reason why I wanted to have this team. I have not made any change ot them although there are only three models, I felt like having different heads would be enough.

Goblins

Again, as with the Black Orcs, I changed nothing. Since they all have different heads it should be enough variety.

Troll

I don't really like this miniature. The pose is quite weird and difficult to understand, let's see how I can tackle it properly.

Varag

This one will be quite the challenge. The guy is massive and with lots of details. I think it is just too much for Blood Bowl.

Linemen

Since these are exactly the same figures I applied some minor changes to add variety to them. One of the linemen has an eagle on the chest while the other one doesn't. As for the other two figures, I added some minor details with greenstuff.

Bodyguards

Here we have the same problem, so I added a couple of beards to change the faces at least.

Blitzers and Throwers

In this case I changed the hairstyle of one of the Throwers and added a different type of beard to one Blitzer.

Ogre

No changes on this one, as it is a great model.

Griff

I decided not to use the eagle that goes with him since it is way over the top for my taste. I think it looks better without it.

We hope to start the challenge in late February or beginning of March, so stay tuned!

Blood Bowl: Undead (II)

Back in June I posted about my Undead Team. I mentioned that two Ghouls were missing because the box comes only with two although the roster can fit up to four.

Therefore, after getting my hands on them, here are the first painted miniatures of 2021!

These are two ghouls as well as two skeletons and two zombies. I do not really need the skeletons or zombies, but I thought that maybe at some point I want to use either only zombies or only skeletons and I would not have enough, therefore, I decided to paint them as well.

  1. Terminar Ejército 40K de Genestealer Cult [aquí]
  2. Pintar equipo Blood Bowl no muerto [aquí]
  3. Pintar Warcry: Iron Golems y bestias caóticas [aquí]
