Space Hulk: Terminators (I)

Today I bring the first two terminators from Space Hulk, after having painted already all the Genestealers.
I have chosen similar techniques as for the Xenos, but because of the level of detail of these figures, I have decided to limit it to 2 hours per miniature instead of the 1 hour limit I had before. Still, nowhere near the time I would need to do a proper job, but if I ever want to have my collection painted, I'd rather paint faster with lower quality than slower and leaving all the figures without paint!

The choice of colours therefore has been quite limited so that I can do it fast. I have painted them in batchs of 3 or 4.

The list of colours used are:
Game Color
  • Terracota - for armour
  • Tinny Tin - for metal
  • Bright Bronze - for gold
  • Wolf Grey - for Crux Terminator
  • Black
  • Charred Brown - base coat for purity seal patchs
  • Magic Blue - power weapon
Panzer Aces
  • USMC Tankcrew - eyes and lenses
Model Color
  • Gunmetal Grey - for metal
  • Beige Brown - highlight for purity seal patchs
Citadel
  • Xereus Purple - decorative blood drops
  • Mephiston Red - armour highlight
Game Ink
  • Skin Wash
  • Brown
Army Painter Quickshade
  • Dark Tone
  • Strong Tone
The technique is:
  1. Paint all base colours
  2. Wash on recesses
  3. Highlights
Basically, I try to be very careful not to go out of the areas on step #1 so that after the wash I just need to apply the highlights and be done with it.
Of course that means that the miniatures are quite flat, but more than enough -I believe- for a casual tabletop game. Looking at how fast I can paint, I believe that spending 2 hours per figure delivers an acceptable result.

Space Hulk: Patriarch

After all the Genestealers are done, here comes daddy! I spent just around two hours on the model, which is much more than what I spent with the smaller ones. Still, many things I would have liked to do better, but it is now done and battle ready. It is a very similar to the other Patriarch I already painted, but of a much lower quality sculpt, it is also 10 or so years older.

The terminators are next, and these guys are more challenging as they have many more details, let's see how fast I can go.

Space Hulk: Genestealers (IV)

With these five I have finished all Genestealers from the box!
Of course, because the time I spent in each one is very limited, I could not paint all details up to the level I would have liked, such as cables, base and so on, but they are more than enough to go on the battlefield.

Next, the Patriarch!

Space Hulk: Genestealers (III)

There is not much to say about this post, aside from the fact that another five are done, and that now I have more painted Genestealers than unpainted!

Space Hulk: Genestealers (I)

I think this is a good moment for me to tackle Space Hulk just after having painted the Genestealer Cult Kill-Team. The recipe is fresh in my mind and I got used to painting them.
Initially, I was planning on following this recipe but in the end I followed the same one I outlined here.
In any case, here are the first six Genestealers ready to eat some Terminators.
There is nothing much to add regarding the painting technique used aside from the fact that the red of the Terminator armour was done with Terracota and then highlight with Mephiston Red from Games Workshop and mixing Fiery Orange for edge highlight.
For the ones that are either on the floor or in the claws of the Genestealers I decided not to put any blood or any chapter markings as I painted them as old trophies and remains of ancient battles, and therefore, time has faded all of those markings and the blood could not be fresh. Also, it makes it much faster to paint.

Kill Team Genestealer Cult

After showing all the members of the band it is finally time for a family picture!

This marks the first milestone of the year as one of the three goals is now accomplished!

I am going to tackle as next project the Space Hulk box that has been sitting on the pile for way too many years, and it is also my second goal for the year.

The picture is not very good but it is difficult for me to make a good group picture.
That's a total of 1 Patriarch, 2 Genestealers, 4 Aberrants, 3 Acolyte Hybrids, 11 Neophytes, 1 Primus and 1 Magus... 23!
